All individuals have their personal reasons for giving gifts at Christmas season. It is so awkward to think of remembering Christmas in the present time without thinking of gift giving. But, let me ask you, have you ever thought of the reason why do we give gifts on Christmas day?
In several ways, the customs of handing out gifts at Christmas are a prehistoric tradition. Being a Christian, the exercise of gift giving during Christmas is drawn back to the presents of gold, myrrh and frankincense that were offered to the Christ child of the three men. The Kings magi came from the East, a wise man who journeyed a massive distance next to a star, to locate Christ and to hand over the gifts. The visit of the Magi to the child Christ was initially commemorated on Epiphany Feast every 6th of January. Eventually, the custom of gift giving became associated with Christmas rather than with the Feast of Epiphany. It is the moment from Christmas until Epiphany in the calendar of the Church, and that’s December 25 to January 6. It is established as the “12 days of Christmas” that came from the age-old Christmas carol. Although, Santa Claus has not anything to do with the real thought of Christmas, but when people talk about the tale of Santa Claus, he pretends figure and kindness in granting the wishes of children and giving gifts to the less fortunate, it reminds us that Christmas is one of the perfect day for gift giving.
To be sure, the early Church did not commemorate Christmas as much as it abide Christmas being a holy day. It wasn’t really until the present time. The custom of gift giving to our loved ones on Christmas Day turns out to be more famous as the middle time finished and the present time begins. Different states and people started to create gift-giving as part of the normal holy day or the “holiday” through the period of time. By the moment the Americans were established, gift giving on Christmas Day was exercised by lots of settlers. People that are followers of Jesus handed out gifts to recall the real thoughts of giving gifts and that is JESUS! But with Christians, presents are given on Christmas as a chance to prove our love. Unfortunately, this time has been taken as a viable chance and a lot of individuals spoil in materialism and disregard the real connotation of Christmas.
Now, we all hand out gifts on Christmas Day for our personal reasons. For certain people, it is a means to commemorate the holy day of Christians. For others, it is an exceptional moment to allow your family and friends to be aware that you care for them through gift giving. Occasionally, gift giving on Christmas Day happens to be sort of mechanical and a task; and that is the thought that I presume you readers and I would like to remove. We must bring back again the real spirit of gift giving on Christmas Day and pass it on to the next generation; that Christmas is way of spreading love, care and giving and remembering the birth of Jesus as it is called CHRISTmas day!
